With at least 30 child and mother care centres damaged in the Uttarakhand flashfloods, the Women and Child Development Ministry today decided to foot the cost of their re-construction.

Senior officials of Women and Child Development Ministry and chairperson of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights would also undertake a tour of the rain-ravaged areas of Uttarakhand tomorrow to assess the damage to the anganwadis (child and mother care centres).

WCD Minister Krishna Tirath said she has spoken to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna and the concerned ministers on the issue.

"I have spoken to the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand and concerned ministers who have told me that about 30 anganwadis have been damaged due to the heavy rains, but the number can be much more. So, we have decided to bear 100 per cent construction cost of those anganwadis," she said.

Tirath said she has also written a letter to the Prime Minister and Finance Minister in this regard.

Apart from touring some of the damaged anganwadis to take stock of the situation, the team of officials comprising Joint Secretary Vivek Joshi and NCPCR Chairperson Kushal Singh will also review steps taken for the care, protection and rehabilitation of children and women hit by the tragedy.
