With around 2,400 children waiting for adoption in the country, Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi is taking steps to clear pending cases of children in institutions immediately.

Gandhi has written to Chief Justices of all High Courts and to all district judges in the country to expedite the legal procedure involved in the adoption process, WCD ministry officials said today.

There are around 2,400 children waiting for adoption in about 324 Specialised Adoption Agencies. There are over 1,250 children's homes in the country, a statement by WCD said.

Under the directions of WCD minister, the ministry is working to integrate children's homes with specialised adoption agencies making older children also available for adoption, the statement said.

Details of Child Welfare Committees and lawyers have been uploaded on the website of Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) which has also been integrated with Facebook, it said.
