"Up North, we don't particularly have a women-loving culture. Women have to think twice while going out," Shergill told PTI.

However, in Goa and Maharashtra, they have a nice women respecting culture, he noted.

The "Bulla Ki Jaana" singer partly attributed this women-hating behaviour to historical reasons.

"In Delhi and surrounding areas, we never had women respecting culture may be because of historic reasons. We had to suffer so many invasions where foreign men would take away women. Due to this, we ended up looking at them as a reason for our downfall," he explained.

"Now those reasons have vanished and we require a great push on the part of the government to bring a change where women are respected," Shergill said here yesterday.

Being a brother to four sisters, the musician said he understood the daily difficulties of a woman, when she goes out.

"Women have same earning capacity as men, same intellectual capability, but in certain pockets of Delhi women are still disrespected. They are being looked as item of use and discard. This is unacceptable. It pains me greatly," he added.
