A selfie-taking drone that attaches to the wrist has won a USD 500,000 award in Intel's Make it Wearable competition.
Eleven months ago, Intel kicked off the Make It Wearable (MIW) Challenge that aimed to identify technology that fits into people's lives seamlessly and improves daily life in a meaningful way.
A three-member team which developed a wristband that turns into a camera-equipped drone has won the USD 500,000 prize.
Aimed at outdoor enthusiasts, the Nixie quadcopter can fly from your wrist, take pictures in the sky, and return like a boomerang. It also syncs to smartphones, 'pocket-lint.Com' reported.
The Nixie team comprises Christoph Kohstall, a Stanford postdoctoral researcher, Jelena Jovanovic and Michael Miedermayer.
The second prize of USD 200,000 went to Open Bionics - a robotic prosthetic hand that can replicate advanced functionality - all for under USD 1,000.
The third-place winner was ProGlove which received an award of USD 100,000. It is described as a "professional wearable production tool" that assembly line workers can wear to improve quality.
