Welder dies as vehicle's fuel tank explodes, another injured

A welder died when a municipal garbage collection vehicle's fuel tank exploded during a repair work and caught fire this afternoon near Reay Road railway station here, police said.

The deceased's helper sustained serious burn injuries in the incident, they added.

"The deceased, identified as Rehman, was repairing the garbage collection vehicle of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). When he was carrying out welding work underneath the vehicle, its diesel tank exploded and caught fire at around 3.30 pm," a senior police official attached to Kalachowki police station, said.

Rehman, who was in his late twenties, died on the spot, while his helper Shiraz Ahmed (16) sustained 80 to 90 per cent burn injuries, police said.
 

Shiraz is being treated at a local hospital and his condition is stated to be critical, the officer said adding that further investigation is underway.
