West Bengal DGP to remain in office till May, 2018

Director General of West Bengal Police Surajit Kar Purakayastha will continue in office till May 2018 in compliance with a Supreme Court order of 2006, which directed that DGP or IGP of a state police will remain in office for not less than two years, the state Home Department said here today.

Purakayastha, who was to reach his retirement age of 60 in December this year, would now continue in office till May 31, 2018.

The West Bengal government issued the order today stating "In compliance of order of the Supreme Court passed on June 22, 2006 on the basis of a civil writ petition that the DG or IG of Police, West Bengal, shall hold office for not less than two years irrespective of his date of superannuation."
 

Purakayastha, who has taken over as DGP of West Bengal Police on May 31, 2016, shall hold office as DGP upto May 31, 2018, the Home Department said.

Purakayastha was the Commissioner of Kolkata Police till January, 2016.
