West Bengal Transport Minister Madan Mitra, incarcerated in connection with the Saradha scam, was shifted to Intensive Treatment Unit (ITU) of a state-run hospital after he complained of chest pain and respiratory distress.

"The minister was moved to the ITU last night after he complained of chest pain. The oxygen saturation of his body was found to have deteriorated after diagnosis so he was taken to the ITU immediately," SSKM Hospital Director Prof(Dr) Manju Banerjee told PTI today.

Describing the deterioration of oxygen saturation as "critical", Banerjee said the minister's condition has "improved a bit" this morning after high-end antibiotics were administered to him.

"It's critical because chances of catching cold for such patients are higher. In fact Mitra has lungs problems. Dcotors have prescribed him high-end antibiotics. His condition after today's check-ups was found to have improved a bit but he will continue to remain in the ITU."

Mitra's health condition would be reviewed twice daily, she said adding and senior doctors are keeping a close watch on him.

Mitra, arrested in December last year in the multi-crore Saradha scam have been charge sheeted by CBI for several offences including criminal conspiracy. He has been spending most of his time in the hospital citing illness.

On CBI's plea, a city court had directed Alipore jail authorities to furnish details of Mitra's stay in hospital and prison.
