A nine-year-old white tiger died at Bannerghatta Biological Park after it was badly injured in a fight with four Royal Bengal tigers, a top BBP official said today.

Three days ago, the royal Bengal tigers attacked the albino tiger 'Shreyas' leaving deep puncture wounds in its spinal cord and thoracic region.

The tiger succumbed to its injuries last night.

BBP director Santosh Kumar said the tiger died of shock. "We gave proper medication to stabilise the animal and it was responding but suddenly last night it died," he added.

The Bengal tigers had entered the enclosure for the white tigers when their gates were left open.

An inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the reason for leaving the gates open, BBP sources said.

The tiger was born on January 24, 2008 at the BBP.

After Shreyas death, five white tigers are left in the BBP, while there are 24 royal Bengal tigers, Kumar said.
