Former Law Minister and Congress leader M Veerappa Moily today questioned the government as to why it did not ask CBI chief Ranjit Sinha to go on leave after the Supreme Court asked him to keep off the probe into the 2G scam.
He said the apex court had questioned the credibility of CBI as an institution and "there is no response from the government."
Moily said, "...This never happens. You should have asked him to go on leave. Something has to be done urgently to restore credibility of CBI chief's office."
He was participating in the debate to amend the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act to include the leader of the single largest opposition party in the panel to select the CBI chief as there is no recognised Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. The bill was passed in the Lok Sabha today.
In an unprecedented order earlier this month, the Supreme Court ordered CBI director Sinha to keep off the 2G case as it found prima facie "credible" the charges that he had attempted to help the accused in the spectrum scam.
"We direct the CBI director not to interfere in the 2G scam investigation or prosecution. He will recuse himself from the case," the apex court had said.
