A statutory body for approving genetically modified crops, which met here today, is learnt to have re-validated proposals for wider field trials for 10 genetically modified crops including wheat and rice.

According to sources, the Genetic Engineering Advisory Committee (GEAC) did not take up new proposals for GM crops.

This was the first meeting of the GEAC this year after it recommended these proposals for clearance in its meeting held in March last year.

The decision will allow seed giants like Monsanto India Limited to carry out phase-II field trials for these GM crops.

Phase-II trials allow the companies to grow crops in larger areas.
