Congratulating the people for the "massive response" to the protest actions, the party Politburo said, "The struggle against these anti-people measures should be intensified in the coming days."
It demanded lifting of restriction on gas cylinders, apart from cancellation of FDI in retail, disinvestment of public sector shares and rolling back of price hike of diesel.
"The widespread support for the hartal manifested the anger of the people against the anti-people measures taken by the UPA government," the CPI(M) said.
Eight parties -- Samajwadi Party, BJD, JD(S), TDP, CPI (M), CPI, RSP and Forward Bloc -- had given a call for observing the day through hartal, demonstrations, picketing and court arrests across the country.
The CPI(M) said the protest was successful in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tripura, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand and other states.
In West Bengal, it said the strike call was implemented "despite attacks on Left Front workers by Trinamool Congress goons in a number of places".
In Delhi, leaders of the eight parties, including Mulayam Singh Yadav (SP), H D Deve Gowda (JD-S), N Chandrababu Naidu (TDP), Prakash Karat (CPI-M), S Sudhakar Reddy, A B Bardhan (CPI), Ram Gopal Yadav (SP) and Sitaram Yechury (CPI-M) courted arrest near Parliament House.
In Maharashtra, there was no strike in Mumbai because of Ganesh Chaturthi, but protest demonstrations and local strikes took place in various cities and towns in the state, it added.
