A wild elephant today gave birth to a male calf in a banana farm on the city outskirts.
Hearing the continuous trumpeting sound in early hours, local residents went to the farm at Pannimadai where they saw the elephant delivering the calf, police said.
However, when they attempted to go near it, the elephant did not allow them.
