Wildlife Awareness Week, an annual affair to create awareness towards protection and conservation of wildlife, began here today with people holding a procession in Pallia town under the aegis of Dudhwa Tiger Reserve (DTR).

The Week will be marked by programmes like seminars, symposiums on wildlife protection in Dudhwa, various cultural programmes and competetions for children, Deputy Director, DTR, Pinaki Prasad Singh told PTI.

"The rally on foot is the inaugural part of the programmes to mark the wildlife awareness week, held every year in the first week of October.

"As many as 61 eco development societies operating in DTR, students of dozens of schools, wildlife experts and activists and officials of DTR would lead the rally (march) which would pass through the Pallia city roads," he said.

Dudhwa Tiger Reserve is opened for public from November 15 every year.

Singh said the aim behind the exercise was to motivate people to provide a cover to wildlife species in Dudhwa.

Dudhwa Tiger Reserve is a major national park of UP which attracts tourists, research scholars and wildlife experts owing to its enriched flora and fauna. This is a tiger reserve where the big cat's population has registered growth.

Located on India-Nepal border in the Terai region of UP, DTR is home to innumerable species of endangered birds and animals. Rhinoceros population was also relocated here.

Singh, during his earlier tenure in 2007, had established Nature Interpretation Center and an auditorium in Dudhwa which have become a hub of tourists attraction and pro-wildlife activities.
