The district's Forest Department officials today began the three-day annual wildlifecensusat Point Calimere (Kodiakarai) wildlifesanctuary.
Forest officials said college students, researchers and volunteers would be helping out in the work, in which over 70 persons are engaged. Specialists from Bombay Natural History Society are offering guidance.
Due to the census operation, the sanctuary will remain closed for public till March 26.

The Point Calimeresanctuary, situated on a 20 square kmarea of dry evergreen forests in the district, attracts a large number of black bucks, chitals, wild boars, Olive Ridley turtles and about 200 rare species of birds.
The Forest Department conducts two types of censusevery year to keep track of the bird and animal population.
Nagapattinam DistrictWildlife Warden C Vidya is leading thecensusoperation, results of which would be announced next week.
