In his condolence message, the Governor said, "A K Hangal's smiling gentle face, both on the screen and off it, assured people that he is a man with values who will stand by truth come what may. Hangal portrayed the most lovable fatherly figure in a number of films."
It will be difficult for film makers to find a kinder face for character roles, he said.
Chavan said in Hangal's death the Hindi film industry had lost a loving fatherly figure. "Throughout his career, Hangal essayed role of a man of principles and ideals. He lived the same life that he essayed on silver screen," he said.
Hangal was also a freedom fighter who struggled for labour rights, the Chief Minister noted.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said the film industry had lost a multi-faceted and versatile actor. His dialogue from Sholay "Itna sannata kyun hai bhai" will always be remembered.
