The Centre today said it will deliberate on the Haryana government's suggestion to implement recommendations of Swaminathan Commission report in phased manner.
"Haryana Chief Minister (Manohar Lal Khattar) raised the Swaminathan Commission report three days back and this issue came up today as well.
"The state (Haryana) government has proposed that recommendations of Swaminathan Commission be implemented in a phased manner rather than implementing in one go," Union Minister of State for Agriculture Sanjeev Kumar Balyan said here today.
"It is a good suggestion and we will deliberate on the same before taking decision in this regard," Balyan said who was part of the Central delegation led by Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan to take a stock of damaged crops in Haryana because of untimely rains and hailstorm.
To a query, he asserted that the BJP led Centre was not rejecting the recommendations of Swaminathan Commission report.
Noted farm scientist M S Swaminathan had recommended in his report that farmers should be given 50 per cent profit over and above the input cost.
Union Minister of State said out of 22 crops in the country, two crops-wheat and paddy are procured at Minimum Support Price (MSP).
"The system is not fully yet developed for procuring rest of 20 crops at MSP," he said emphasising that procurement system should be developed first
Balyan though said the recommendations of Swaminathan Commission report are "good" for farmers yet these recommendations should not be considered as "ramban" (solution) of farmers' problems under present conditions.
The Swaminathan Commission report has been a major issue in both Haryana and Punjab with farming communities demanding from the Centre to implement this report as early as possible to mitigate their woes.
Farmers' organisations in Haryana this month had even resorted to protest and road blockade to pressurise the Central government to implement Swaminathan Commission report.
Congress had even raised the Commission's report in the recently concluded budget session of Haryana assembly, alleging that BJP had turned "silent" on this issue.
Even Punjab Vidhan Sabha had passed a resolution recommending the state government to approach the Centre for implementing the recommendations of Swaminathan Commission report.
