Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan today visited family members of fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy recently and assured them that steps would be taken for securing their release.

Radhakrishnan visited Nambiar Nagar fishing hamlet here and assured the fisherfolk that the Centre will take all steps to secure the release of the arrested fishermen along with their boats.

The Minister appealed to the fishermen of the area not to venture into the Lankan waters for fishing.

A total of 31 fishermen of Nagapattinam district have been arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy during the past three weeks.

Fishermen of the district have launched an indefinite strike and are also undertaking various agitations in protest against the arrests.

Asked about DMK Treasurer's M K Stalin's pre-election 'Namukke Naame' (We for Ourselves) tour to woo electors ahead of 2016 Assembly polls, Radhakrishnan claimed his tour would not be of any use to the party.

"The DMK is not going to come to power in Tamil Nadu in the next assembly elections," he said.
