Actor William Hurt has quit the Gregg Allman biopic in the wake of a train accident that killed one of the film's camera assistants.

Production on the movie has been halted in the aftermath of Sarah Jones dying after being struck by a train while preparing to shoot scenes in Georgia, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

A criminal investigation is currently underway to determine if any charges will be brought over Jones's death.

Hurt had been cast as the older version of Allman in the film and was present at the time of Jones's death, but has now quit the project.

Producers apparently were working on recasting the role even before Hurt formally left the movie.

There has been talk of re-starting production in Los Angeles in the coming weeks, in spite of a recent social media campaign against the continuation of the film.

Tyson Ritter has been cast as a younger version of Allman, with supporting star-cast including Eliza Dushku, Bradley Whitford and Zoey Deutch.
