US Consul General in Hyderabad Katherine Hadda today said she hoped to see more number of female students from India opting to pursue higher education in her country.

Speaking at the annual University Fair organised by the US India Education Foundation (USIEF) and EducationUSA here, she said Indian students comprise about 16 per cent of the total international students studying in America.

"Education is a prominent pillar of the Indo-US partnership. We are committed to providing Indian students with the opportunity to pursue a world-class education in the United States.

"Since the time I arrived in Hyderabad a year ago, I observed as of my colleagues that, not enough female students are applying for studies in United States. India and the world need more Indian female leaders and what we would like to see is more balanced gender figure in the number of Indian students going to US," Hadda said.

During academic year 2015-16, there were 1,66,000 Indian students in US, which is the second largest of any group of international students, the envoy said.

Over 50 per cent of the Indian student are pursuing post graduate studies, she added.

At the fair, as many as 35 US-based universities participated, including University of California Los Angeles Extension, Colorado State University, University of Southern California's Viterbi Graduate School of Engineering, Arizona State University, and University of Utah's David Eccles School of Business.

EducationUSA is a global network of advising centres in 170 countries that is supported by the US Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA).
