With millets getting popular
among the food lovers and diet consciouspeople, the agricultural department in this district is taking steps to revive the cultivation of Samai (little millet), which was facing becoming a veryrare variety of millet.
"We plan to promote seed farms for promoting the cultivation of little millet which could be used in a variety of dishes including idly and dosa. We have already taken steps to revive Kuthiraivali (Barn Yard millet), and now we want to focus on little millet" a top official of the agricultural department said.
"As the millet improves the power of immunity in the body,the nutritious millets are becoming very popular once again. People who focussed on rice cultivation now were looking for saamai cultivation" he said.
Millets played a major role in preventing soil erosion and also harvesting rain water and protecting soil health as well askeep the pests at bay.
The cultivation of Saamai variety also is very cheap compared to other crops.
