in, around 12,000 blankets will be distributed to students of residential schools run by the Scheduled Tribe and Scheduled Caste welfare departments in Kandhamal district.

"We will float tender for supply of such huge quantities of blankets. These will be supplied to the children by this month-end," said District Welfare Officer (DWO) Ganeswar Bharimal.

The government has provided the funds for the blankets at the rate of Rs 250, officials said.

Around 32,000 students starting from Class 1 to X, are housed in the 242 hostels of residential schools. "Last year, the district administration distributed around 11,000 blankets to students," the DWO said.

The DWO, however, ruled out distributing sweaters or other winter garments among hostel inmates. The district administration is likely to approach some nationalised and private banks and other NGOs for supply of sweaters from their corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds this time, added a senior officer.

The district administration has distributed around 10,000 mosquito nets among the inmates of residential schools and hostels.
