Police today arrested a 40-year- old woman, days after her vehicle knocked down a 26-year-old dietician in south Delhi's Saket.

Varnita Garg, a junior dietician working with Pushpawati Singhania Research Institute (PSRI), was hit by two vehicles in a span of a few seconds on July 31.

Garg is on ventilator at the AIIMS Trauma Centre.

A security guard, who was walking behind her, told police that she was first hit by an SUV and then by a black Mahindra Scorpio.

Both the vehicles drove off after the accident. One of the onlookers managed to note down the three digits of the Scorpio's registration number and handed it over to the police.

Four days after the incident, the police made the first arrest in the case today. Preeti Singh, a resident of Saket, was arrested, said Ishwar Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South).

She was driving the Scorpio, the police officer said.

Singh was going to drop her child to school when the accident took place. Her husband is a businessman, police said.

Police were yet to trace the first vehicle.

The security guard had claimed that it seemed the two cars were racing. The matter is being investigated, police said.

Garg is the sole breadwinner of her family. She had joined the institute around two years ago after her father's death.
