Woman arrested for killing infant daughter

A woman was arrested from Dombivali area here for allegedly killing her five-day-old baby girl, police said today.

Sujata Gaikwad (24), a resident of Ambernath area in Thane, was held yesterday in connection with the case of a newborn girl found dead on a terrace of a nursing home in Dombivali, inspector at Dombivali police station S B Shivarkar said.

The newborn child was found dead on the terrace attached to the second-floor of the general ward in Shubhada Nursing Home on March 12, following which a complaint was filed.

During the course of investigation, police arrested the mother of the infant girl last night on charges of killing her newborn daughter.
 

According to the complaint filed by the woman on March 12, she saw her daughter missing from the cradle at the general ward after she returned from the washroom while her mother and mother-in-law had gone down for breakfast.

Soon after, the baby's body was recovered from the hospital premises, Dr Pushkar Pradhan, head of the nursing home informed the local Ramnagar police station.

"We investigated the case from all angles and it is a case of female foeticide," he said, adding that a case of murder under section 302 of IPC has been registered against the woman.
