Woman booked for mortgaging fake gold to get Rs 7.14 lakh loan

A 32-year-old woman from Thane district in Maharashtra has been booked for allegedly mortgaging fake gold ornaments with a finance company to avail a loan of over Rs seven lakh, police said on Tuesday.

The accused, identified as Amrin Mohammad Jaid Shaikh, came to a branch of Muthoot Fincorp Ltd in Ambernath township here on different dates between November 23 and 29.

She took a loan of Rs 7.14 lakh after mortgaging ornaments collectively weighing 278 gm, a police spokesperson said.

Later, when the finance company got the mortgaged ornaments inspected by an authorised jeweller, they were found to be fake, the official said.

 

The finance company's manager lodged a police complaint against the woman on Monday.

The accused was booked under Indian Penal Code Section 420 (cheating), the official said, adding that no arrest was made so far.
