A 30-year-old woman was charred to death on Wednesday after a shanty located in Panchashil Nagar slum here caught fire, police said.
The deceased, Sunita Lahoti, a resident of Bhagur in the district, had come to her aunt's house where the incident took place, they said.
The shanty was completely gutted in the blaze, which also damaged some other houses in the slum, in-charge of Bhadrakali police station, Mangalsinh Suryavanshi, said.
"Lahoti had come to reside at her aunt Bhagubai Avhad's house in the slum. Before the fire broke out yesterday afternoon, Avhad had stepped out to buy some vegetables, which is why she escaped unhurt," he added.
As the area was congested, the fire brigade used extended water pipes to douse the fire.
Police have registered a case and initiated a probe into the mishap.
