A 36-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance in Abairani village in the district here, police said.

According to police, the woman, identified as one Gayatri Agrawal, took the extreme step last evening.

The woman was employed as a 'Shiksha Mitra', police said, adding that, as per her neighbours, she was anxious about the fate of contractual teachers in Uttar Pradesh following an Allahabad High Court order last month declaring as illegal the move to regularise them.

Her husband had ended his life a few years back troubled by financial woes, police said.

Gayatri, who was rushed to a hospital, succumbed during treatment, said Deputy SP Ajai Kumar, adding that the body has been handed over to her kin following a post mortem.
