Woman construction worker gives new lease of life to six

A 45-year-old female construction worker, who was declared brain dead following an accident, has given fresh lease of life to six persons with her vital organs being harvested today.

The donor, Meenakshi had sustained head injuries after the two-wheeler she was travelling in, collided with another vehicle, yesterday at Mettupalayam, Chairman of KG Hospital G Bhakthavatsalam said in a release today.

The woman was brought to the Hospital in a critical condition, he said.

After checking all the vital health parameters and conducting the mandatory apnea examination the same evening, a panel of authorized doctors declared her as brain dead.
 

Meenakshi's husband gave consent to donate her organs, following which the hospital management duly informed the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu.

The harvested organs were allotted to five hospitals, it said.

Heart and lungs were transplanted at Frontier Lifeline Hospital, Chennai, while the liver was given to Manipal Hospital in Salem, Kidneys, one each to KG Hospital and another to Sri Ramakrishna Hospital and Eyes to Sankara Nethralaya here.

The district authorities helped in creating a Green Corridor for the speedy and unhindered passage of the organs to the respective destinations, Bhakthavatsalam added.
