The incident took place yesterday when the woman deputy mukhiya Asma Khatun sat on a chair at a meeting of Kauria gram panchayat held at the government school premises.

The upper caste men took strong exception and allegedly assaulted the 60-year-old woman and her son Aftab for showing "disrespect" to them, the sources said.

Aftab alleged six upper caste men assaulted his mother and injured her for "daring to sit" on a chair before them and other high caste people at the panchayat meeting.

Aftab said he too was attacked but escaped without any injury.

Khatun was rushed to the sadar hospital, he added.

Siwan Superintendent of Police Satyaveer Singh said an FIR was lodged against the six accused in the incident and strict action would be taken against them.

Searches were on to apprehend the accused, he added.

Bihar Minority Commission (BMC) has taken the incident seriously and its chairman Naushad Ahmed has spoken to Aftab to find out the details of the matter.

"Aftab has narrated the entire sequence of events and apprehended threat to his life from the accused who have cut off the road to his house," he said.

Ahmed said he had asked the district police to provide adequate security to the family and file another FIR against the accused for threatening the two with dire consequences and blocking the road to their residence.
