A woman was swept away by the strong current of Kharkai river when she took a holy dip on Chhath festival on Friday and was rescued by two Jharkhand police constables, who were felicitated here today.
The 57-year-old woman was swept away when she slipped and fell into the river while performing Chhath puja to the rising sun at a ghat in neighbouring Adityapur of Seraikela-Kharswan district, East Singhbhum senior superintendent of police Anoop T Mathew said.
She was swept away about 600 meter when the people offering puja at Shiv Ghat at Jugsalai in Jamshedpur spotted her and raised an alarm, he said.

The two constables, Chunuram Soren and Samir Samad who were deployed at Shiv Ghat with life jackets, leapt into the river and saved the woman.
She was provided first aid and later handed over to the family members at her home.
A pall of gloom had descended on the locality where her residence is situated after the woman was swept away. When she returned home her family members leaped up in joy, he said.
The two constables were felicitated by Mathew and superintendent of police (city) Prasant Anand for their brave act.
The woman was present on the occasion was also felicitated.
