Woman dies days after sterilisation surgery

A 32-year-old woman, who had undergone a surgery at a sterilisation camp earlier this week, died today at a private hospital here, triggering protest by her family members, district officials said.

Sunita Yadav had undergone surgery at a sterilisation camp on March 24 and was later admitted to community health centre here as complications arose, they added.

Last night, as her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to the private hospital of Dr Sushil Gupta, who had conducted the operation in the camp, where she died today morning, officials said.

The enraged family members who staged demonstration at the community health centre and at the private hospital were pacified and the body was sent for post-mortem, they added.
 

Chief Medical Officer Umakant Verma said the doctor concerned has been take off duty and recommendation for his suspension has also been made.

Verma said there were reports earlier too that Dr. Gupta had shifted four women whose condition had deteriorated after operation in such a camp to his private hospital.

A case for causing death by negligence under Section 304 of the IPC has been lodged against the doctor, Circle Officer Ayodhya Prasad Singh said, adding that family of the deceased is being given an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh.
