Woman dies of dehydration in hunger strike

A 40-year-old woman died of dehydration while she was on a hunger strike demanding the re-opening of a sugar mill in Maholi area which has been closed for 17 years, police said.

Ramrati, a labour union member, died last evening while she was on a hunger strike with 30 other women demanding the start of work at the sugar mill, police said.

Her condition detoriated towards the evening following which she was taken to a local hospital. She was declared dead by the doctors who gave dehydration as the reason for her death, police said.

A case has been registered against the agitators after they were warned against staging the protest, police said, adding that the woman died of the heat.
