Woman doctor arrested for torturing tribal woman

A woman doctor was arrested in Odisha's Kandhamal district on charge of torturing and harassing a pregnant tribal woman who was her domestic help, a senior police officer said today.

Ambika Mohapatra (45), an AYUSH doctor (ayurvedic/ homeopath) at Katringia Health centre, was arrested and sent to jail yesterday on the basis of an FIR lodged at Sadar Police Station by the 25-year-old complainant, said Sub-Divisional Police Officer Prabhat Panigrahi today.

In the FIR lodged on Saturday, the woman hailing from Gochapada area in the district alleged that the lady doctor, who was unmarried, had brought her here about two months ago, Officer In-Charge of Sadar police station, T R Nayak said.
 

Since then the complainant had been working as a domestic help at the house of the doctor in Patrapada area of Phulbani, he said, adding, instead of taking care of the pregnant woman the doctor harassed and tortured her, according to the complaint.

It was alleged that the doctor had been physically and mentally torturing the tribal woman and even locked her inside the house while going out, the OIC said quoting the FIR.

Following advice of her relatives and village seniors, the tribal woman finally lodged the FIR on Saturday. The doctor was arrested yesterday and sent to jail after being produced before court.
