A woman and her father-in-law died of asphyxia while three others are undergoing treatment after they fell into a sewage tank in Odisha's Jagatsinghpur district today, police said.

The mishap occurred in Kolata-Berhampur under Raghunathpur police station when they slipped into the tank in their unsuccessful attempt to save one another, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Jagatsinghpur Rabi Jena said.

Karina Biwi (32) first slipped into the tank when its old and fragile cover caved in while she was passing that way. Her mother-in-law and father-in-law fell down while trying to rescue one another. Two of their neighbours also fell into the tank in the process.

Villagers managed to pull them out from inside the tank but could not save Karina Biwi and her father-in-law Sheikh Abu Kalam (60).

The woman's mother-in-law was shifted to SCB Medical College Hospital at Cuttack in a serious condition while two neighbours were being treated at the government hospital at Raghunathpur, he said.
