A court here today sentenced a 23-year-old woman to life imprisonment for killing her three-day-old child.
District and sessions judge Dipak Kumar Agrawal awarded life imprisonment to Reena Bhagat for killing her infant child and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on her, public prosecutor Madan Dwivedi said.
The child was born to Reena on November 11 last year, six months after she got married, Dwivedi said.
She smothered the child as her husband was pressing for a DNA test to find out the biological father of the infant, the prosecution said.
The charge sheet stated that she committed the crime to make people believe the child was born premature and had died.
This, the charge sheet said, was to dispel doubts in her husband's mind on who was the father of the child.
