A 42-year-old woman was today sentenced to life in prison for murdering her mother in the district in 2016 over a property dispute.

District Mahila Court Judge N Thirunavukkarasu awarded life term to Suseela of Nathagoundenpalayam village for murdering her mother, Kannamma.

The court sentenced her to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for committing theft and three months of RI for trespassing on the land of the deceased.

The judge in his order said all the three sentences would run concurrently.

The prosecution said Suseela and her mother were embroiled in a dispute over sharing of the family's property.

Kannamma was working in her agricultural land on August 29, 2016 when Suseela went there and picked up a quarrel with her, seeking immediate grant of her share in the property.

When Kannamma refused to pay heed, Suseela beat her mother and strangulated her to death.

She then decamped with gold ornaments worn by the deceased.
