A woman and her granddaughter drowned in a stream while collecting firewood in a village in Pulwama district of south Kashmir, police said today.
Rehmati and her granddaughter Soriya (17) were last evening collecting firewood from near the stream close to their house in Gudpora village, 35 kms from here, when the teenager lost balance and fell into the water, a police spokesman said.
The grandmother jumped into the water to rescue her, but both of them were swept away by the fast-flowing stream, he said.
Villagers along with the police launched a rescue operation and recovered the duo, the spokesman said, adding that they were shifted to hospital where they died.
