A married woman was arrested from Nellore district for allegedly cheating a Bangalore-based techie of over Rs 4 lakh after posing as a software professional on a matrimonial site, police said today.

"The woman posted her profile in the name of A Raj Lakshmi on the matrimonial site while posing as a software professional working with a IT major in Chennai and sought for alliance with "like-minded" people," said Ongole II Town police station sub-inspector V Suryanarayana.

Ashok Reddy, a techie from Bangalore, who went through her profile on the site, got in touch with her through emails and over phone.

"The woman got two persons, who too posed as her parents and spoke to Reddy and agreed for the marriage. In the meanwhile, the woman sought money from Reddy saying that she has to pay it to the IT company in Chennai towards job contract obligations to enable her to quit," Suryanarayana said.

The accused, whose original identity has been withheld by police, allegedly transferred Rs 4.2 lakh, sent by Reddy on two occasions, into her bank account.

However, Reddy grew suspicious and lodged a complaint with Ongole police in Prakasam district.

During the course of investigation, Ongole police tracked the woman to Kavali in Nellore district and arrested her yesterday.

"She was produced before a court today which granted her bail," the police officer said, adding that she had earlier allegedly cheated two others in a similar way.

Police suspect that the woman's husband has deserted her.

A case was registered against her under relevant sections of IT Act and cheating under IPC.
