Disturbed over frequent taunts for not bearing a son, a woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a water tank along with her three daughters, aged between two and six years, in village Mogra Khurd here, police said today.

The bodies of the woman Shobha (27) and her three daughters Raveena (6), Divya (4) and Sanjana (2) were found in the water tank close to her house this morning.

"According to her husband, Madanlal, all the family members had gone to bed last night at 9.30 pm after having dinner.

"While Madanlal slept on the terrace, the other four members were in the house," said Rajpurohit.

In the morning, when Madanlal went inside the house, he did not find his wife and daughters in the room.

He started to look for them and found his wife's footwear near the water tank adjacent to the house. When he looked into it, he found the four bodies floating in the water.

When he raised an alarm, people from the neighbourhood arrived at the site and pulled out the woman and the three children.

However, all of them had died by then, the police said.

Top police officials rushed to the spot and sent the bodies for post mortem.

The police said that Shobha had three daughters and it appeared she was disturbed over the frequent taunts by family members for not bearing a son.

The exact reason behind taking the extreme step will be ascertained after investigation, the police said.
