A 40-year-old woman was killed and 25 others were injured in a stampede at Kamarkundu in Hooghly district in the early hours today, police said.

The stampede took place when the kanwariyas who were on their way to Tarakeshwar Shiva temple rushed in after a railway crossing was opened, police said.

As soon as the gates opened, the pilgrims jostled among themselves to be ahead of others and in the melee, the woman fell on the road and was trampled, they said.

She was declared "brought dead" at Singur Rural Hospital, police said.

Twenty-five others who were injured were admitted to the hospital, they said, adding, district police officers and Railway personnel visited the area today.

Devotees throng the temple on Mondays in the month of 'Shravana' (mid-July to mid-August) as it is considered to be auspicious.
