An elderly woman was killed by a herd of wild elephants in upper Assam's Lakhimpur district, officials said here today.

The woman along with her family members were passing through an area near near Ranga Reserve Forest when the elephants attacked and trampled her to death last night, they said.

The rest of the family fled but the woman could not run and was trampled to death, the officials said.

The herd of elephants had strayed out of the reserve forest a week ago and had killed another person two days back.

Due to frequent rampages by elephants, 104 families in the forest area had urged the forest department to provide them security from the pachyderms.
