A petty dispute over a cricket ball hitting a woman took an ugly turn with a 48-year-old woman stabbed to death and her husband seriously injured allegedly by a neighbour, police said today.

Some boys at Borivili village in Padgha town of Bhiwandi taluka in the district were playing cricket yesterday when a ball hit the woman in the neighbourhood.

Later, the woman, Malti Zavar, and her husband Suresh Zavar (50) complained to the parents of a boy about the youngsters playing the sport in an unsafe manner which led to an argument among them, police said.

The boy's annoyed father, Govind Gorpade, then picked up a sharp weapon from his house and attacked the woman with it, killing her on the spot while her husband sustained serious injuries, they said.

The body was sent for postmortem to government hospital, police said, adding that the woman's husband was admitted to a local hospital.

Offences under sections 302 (murder), and 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC have been registered in connection with the incident, police said adding that further probe was on.

A manhunt has been launched to nab the accused.
