A 40-year-old woman was marched around the village here with her face painted black for her son eloping with a girl recently.

Five persons have been arrested in connection with the incident, police said today.

A panchayat was held yesterday in Chandpur village under Signapur gram panchayat in Talgram police station limits after the girl's father brought the issue to its notice, police said.

The woman had stayed away from the panchayat. Subsequently, some men, including the husband of the pradhan (village head) barged into her house and as per the orders of the panchayat, painted her face black before marching her in the village with a garland of shoes around her neck.

Circle Officer Ambrish Bhadauria said on a complaint from the woman, five accused have been taken into custody, assuring that strict action will be taken on those who took law in their hands.

The son of the woman is still missing while the girl has returned to her relatives' house in a nearby village, police said.
