Some people gathered at the victim Keshari Devi's house last night and started drinking. When she protested they beat her mercilessly leading to her death on the spot, Deputy Superintendent of Police Md Saifuddin said.
The boozers also beat up Devi's daughter-in-law who sustained minor injuries, he said.
The villagers later overpowered a fleeing boozer identified as Shankar Manjhi and handed him to the police, Saifuddin said.
The victim's body has been sent for post-mortem, the DSP said, adding that a case was registered in this connection and an investigation was underway.
