A 29-year-old woman police constable allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at her house near here today, after the man she was in love with refused to marry her, police said.

The victim attached to All Women's Police Station in Ambasamudram near here, took the extreme step at her house in Veeravanallur police station limits, as she was upset over the refusal of the accused, Arumainayagam, a Sub-Inspector trainee, to marry her, they said.

Two months ago, the victim had lodged a complaint with the police that Arumainayagam, who is married, had raped her, but no action was taken so far, they said.

The woman constable had developed an affair with the accused, who is now undergoing training at Chennai police training academy, when they worked in Alangaulam in the district a few years ago.

When the accused disclosed about his marriage to the victim recently, she had compelled him to marry her as well, they added.
