The body of a woman from Ballia has been identified using its photograph almost six months after her death, police has said.

They said they were able identify the body recovered in June as that of the 28-year-old woman who was allegedly gangraped in March and whose 14-month-old child had died during scuffle as she resisted the accused.

They said the body was identified yesterday by showing its photograph to the widower of the woman.

"Her body was recovered on June 20 near Rudrapur town but her identity was ascertained only yesterday with the help of her husband," Bilaspur police station in-charge Rajesh Singh Solanki said.

It was learnt she was the same woman who was allegedly raped by a driver and conductor of a bus on March 7 in an area under Sheeshgarh police station, he said.

Solanki said the Sheeshgar police had found the victim in injured state by the roadside in their area. The victim was sent home after treatment.

The police was then informed she had gone missing and her body was later found, he said.

The accused in the incident had been arrested by the Sheeshgarh police, Solanki added.
