Locals kept the body of a woman who died after giving birth to a baby girl in front of the residence of a medical practitioner who had attended to her alleging medical negligence for her death in Imphal West district, the police said.

The body of 34-year-old Leimapokpam Roma was taken by residents of Kiyamgei area from the J N Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital (JNIMSH) here and placed in front of the house of Dr Laithangbam Bidumukhi at Pishum area, about four km from the woman's house yesterday, the police said.

The senior doctor who is attached to the JNIMSH had attended to Roma during her childbirth on July 9 but the mother died two days after some complications, sources in the hospital said.

Locals of Kiyamgei who formed a Joint Action Committee (JAC) said Roma died due to the 'negligence' of the doctor, a JAC spokesman claimed.

Soon after the incident was reported, police personnel from nearby Shingjamei police station collected the body and later handed it over to the family members, police said.

JAC members had blocked Imphal-Moreh national highway for some hours demanding an apology from the doctor who refused to do so, JAC sources claimed.

The baby is alive, the sources said.
