The body of a woman who fell into an open canal here was recovered from Nandakini river near Nandprayag today, police said.

A resident of Purnakila village of Chamoli district, the woman had fallen into the canal yesterday when she was collecting fodder in the forest, a police official said.

The incident had sparked protest by locals who had staged a dhanra demanding compensation for the kin of the woman and action against the company responsible for leaving the canal open.

Even earlier a youth had drowned after falling into the open canal and repeated requests for covering it had fallen on deaf ears, the villagers complained.

However, the police official said due compensation is being paid to the next of kin of the deceased woman and the villagers are no longer protesting.
