A 20-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her in-laws for dowry at Keal Pankal village under Odisha's Ganjam district.

The deceased was identified as Suneeta Parida from Kotinada village. Her brother Hasamukh Nayak alleged that his sister was poisoned by her in-laws, a charge denied by the deceased's husband Suresh Parida.

"She consumed poison on Saturday night when she was not allowed to go to her father's place," Suresh said, adding, "When she started vomiting, we took her to the sub-divisional hospital in Bhanjanagar. She died at the hospital."

Suneeta was married to Suresh for one-and-a-half years. The couple had no child. Nayak alleged that her sister was being tortured by her husband's family for money for past one year.

Nayak alleged her in-laws informed him over phone that she consumed some poisonous substance and died during treatment in the hospital.

"We will know the cause of the once we get the post-mortem report," Inspector In-Charge of Buguda police station, Ram Chandra Biswal, said.

He said a case of murder has been registered against family members of the woman, including her husband. "We have detained the husband, mother-in-law and brother-in-law of the girl," Biswal added.

According to National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) report, in 2015 a total of 356 cases of dowry related deaths were registered in the state.

The deaths included both murder and suicides, the report said.
