A woman, who was set ablaze allegedly by another villager after a failed rape attempt at Podamari in Odisha's Ganjam district, succumbed to her injuries at MKCG Medical College and Hospital here today.

The 30-year-old woman was alone in her house when the accused, Bhima Gouda (40), allegedly barged in and tried to rape her last night, said Inspector In-Charge of Patapur police station, A K Barik.

However, as the woman strongly resisted, the accused, a milkman, allegedly set her ablaze after pouring kerosene on her, the police said.

The villagers rescued the woman and rushed her to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here. The woman was admitted with over 95 per cent burn injuries and she succumbed to her injuries during treatment, the doctors said.

On the basis of an FIR lodged by the brother in-law of the deceased, the police had detained the accused person and started investigation, the IIC said.

"We are waiting for the post-mortem report to proceed further," he added.
