A 36-year-old woman, who was allegedly set afire by her husband and in-laws for demand of Rs 25 lakh on April 13, succumbed to her burn injuries at a Delhi hospital, police said today.

According to Assistant SP, Anoop Kumar Sangeeta, who was a teacher at a government school in Bulandshahr's Secundrabad town, died last night during treatment at Safdarjung hospital, Delhi.

In his complaint, the woman's brother, Pradeep Verma, had alleged that his sister had been burnt by her husband Sanjiv and mother-in-law Rambhooli at their residence in Swaroop park colony of Sahibabad.

She had married Sanjiv in 2002 and is survived by a 14- year-old daughter and a son (12).

Sangeeta was rushed to a private hospital with 90 per cent burn injuries for treatment where from doctors referred her to Delhi hospital, the ASP said.

Verma had alleged that she was tortured for Rs 25 lakh as his parents had sold a land for Rs 50 lakh, the officer said.

After the incident, her father-in-law Richpal had informed them.

The ASP said her husband had been arrested four days ago and after the woman's death, the case of attempt to murder has been converted to murder and IPC section 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) added to it.

The Dowry Prohibition Act is not applicable because Sangeeta was married 15 years ago, police said.

Police are probing the involvement of her parents-in-law in the case as they claimed that they are not living with his son since long, the officer added.
